Dry Water

Summary
Dry water is the result of coating small water droplets in silica. It is a powdery substance like sugar and is composed of 95% water.

Commentary
Jokes about dehydrated water crystals aside, this is a pretty impressive technique for collecting and containing water which has been around since 1968. In 2006, it was rediscovered as a potential way to absorb carbon gases and a host of other applications.

I've got to think back to other 8th grade jokes to see what future technology will bring.

Reader Question: How is yogurt made?

Question
An anonymous six-year-old child of a reader asks: How is yogurt made?

Summary (for an average six-year-old)
(Based on: Peanut Butter and Jelly)
First you take the milk and you heat it. (You heat it.)
Then you take the milk and you cool it. (You cool it.)
Then you take the bacteria and you add it. (You add it.)
Then it gets fermented. (Fermented.)
For your yogurt... white yogurt... and berries.

Explanation (for a smarter six-year-old)
Yogurt is based on the Turkish words for knead and thick although in some regions (e.g., Bulgaria) it is more like sour milk (which ambiguously refers to both milk that has soured and buttermilk).

The bacteria used in the fermentation process are Lactobacillus delbrueckii subsp. bulgaricus and Streptococcus salivarius subsp. thermophilus which convert the lactose into lactic acid (which is what builds up on your muscles when you exercise, but doesn't degrade performance as previously thought).

Aside from the that the first summary captures the essence of the process.

Origin: Drink From a Fire Hose

Summary
In 1991, a group of MIT students attached a fire hose to a water fountain thus fulfilling former MIT President Jerome Wiesner's notion that getting an education from MIT was comparable to getting a drink from a fire hose.

Synthetic Happiness

Summary
Dan Gilbert has an interesting discussion about ways in which our "experience simulator" (aka prefrontal cortex) makes mistakes-- particularly in judging our future happiness.

Commentary
Gilbert highlights the notion of Impact Bias: "tendency for people to overestimate the length or the intensity of future feeling states." Example: both lottery winners and paraplegics feel about the same level of happiness after a year.

Why? Here are some reasons & insights:
  • There is a sort of psychological immune system that allows us to synthesize happiness.

  • Despite our feeling that "natural happiness" (when we get what we want) is somehow superior to "synthetic happiness" (when we don't get what we want) they are both about the same in quality.

  • Synthetic happiness actually changes your intrinsic preferences and outlook.

  • Irreversible conditions promote synthetic happiness. However, people think they would prefer reversible decisions.

Seedless Fruit

Fun Fact
The term "seedless fruit" is a botanical contradiction in terms because "fruit" are typically defined as having seeds.

Commentary
According to Wikipedia, seedless fruit are the result of either:
  1. fruit that develops unfertilized (parthenocarpy), or
  2. aborted ovules or embryos that didn't produce mature seeds (stenospermocarpy).
The former gives us seedless cucumbers, the latter gives us seedless grapes and watermelon.

fMRI & False Positives

Definitions
fMRI is a way of measuring blood-flow in the brain or spinal cord and, by extension, neural activity in those areas.

A false positive is the sort of mistake your smoke detector makes when it goes off, but there's no smoke.

Summary
Despite the widespread use of fMRI, a few false positives may result in inaccurate results.

Commentary
The image above is striking because the false positives seem to show neural activity in a dead salmon's brain. According to researchers at UCLA Santa Barbra, these errors are due to a problem of multiple comparisons.

Imagine we're playing One of These Things is not Like the Others with several tin cans of Atlantic salmons. At first, it's hard to tell which one is not like the others -- there's a bunch of canned salmon. They have similar color, weight, shape, etc. But as we add different ways of comparing the cans (or more cans to compare), we increase the probability that there will be some way in which one of them differs from the rest -- particularly because of small differences, say manufacturing defects.

[Note: Corrections appreciated.] Now imagine we're collecting data for an fMRI. Each each point (called a voxel) is measured several times with certain extreme values discarded. Now we want to figure out which of the voxels is not like the others -- that's because that's where we expect to see differences in blood flow. However, by comparing voxels we're actually comparing multiple measurements of each voxel to multiple measurements of other voxels. This is like adding more ways of comparing the cans. Moreover, because there is a small bit of noise, the measurements for each voxel can be slightly different each time. This is why we occasionally find some difference between neighboring voxels that isn't really there -- it's a false positive. Luckily there are ways of correcting for this sort of error, but unfortunately, it is not applied as frequently as it should.

Dihydrogen Monoxide

Summary
Dihydrogen monoxide is the name given to a "colorless and odorless chemical compound" that is pervasive in the environment. It's also a fancy-pants way of saying water.

Commentary
In 1997, the DHMO hoax was revived by 14-year-old Nathan Zohner who brought it to the public's attention. Zohner petitioned to get DHMO banned as the basis of his science project, titled "How Gullible Are We?" Many people were very gullible, and this hoax occasionally comes back to haunt politicians.

The Perceptive Lintgen

Summary
In 1982, Arthur Lintgen demonstrated conclusively that he is able to identify many classical phonograph records, by simply looking at them.

Commentary
Lintgen never claimed to have any kind of supernatural powers or that he can read individual notes off of records; he just used his vast knowledge of classical music and phonograph construction to determine, for example, out how many movements there are and their relative duration and loudness. His skills are limited to orchestral music from Beethoven onwards.

Meta
When I have told this story in the past (as recently as 12 days ago), I made two errors:
  1. I was told that he used his fingernail to play the record very quietly and identified it aurally, rather than visually. This was not the case.

  2. I was told that he was going to be paid the JREF award, but, out of a moral sense, confessed to his true methods. This, too, was not the case; he never claimed to have any paranormal abilities; just abnormal abilities.

James Randi is a former magician turned skeptic who is known for his challenges of pseudoscience.

Commentary
James Randi is the founder of the James Randi Educational Foundation (JREF) -- an organization that claims to be "an educational resource on the paranormal, pseudoscientific, and the supernatural." JREF also has a $1 million dollar challenge for concrete evidence, in the form of a mutually-accepted test procedure, of paranormal or supernatural powers. No one has ever won the prize.

Inattentional Blindness

Definition
Inattentional blindness is an explanation for our inability to see certain changes that are usually considered obvious.

Commentary
Derren Brown has demonstrated this effect with different races, accents, and even genders! While the original studies had a fail rate of 75%, Brown's informal study had about a 50% fail rate.

Playgrounds that Generate Electricity

Summary
Empower Playgrounds has installed a carousel for children that generates electricity in Ghana.

Commentary
In 2008, the children at the Golden Sunbeam Montessori School in Ghana received a most welcome gift: a merry-go-round. But unlike other carousels, this one generates electricity that is used in LED lamps. A zip-line that generates electricity is set to go into operation soon.

Punctuation Marks

Summary
Punctuation marks help us understand written text. Incorrectly used punctuation, however, can result in serious consequences or humor.

Commentary
I remember once getting a lesson on the importance of commas:
Russian Tsars would issue verdicts by placing a single comma in pre-written papers that said "Death forbidden pardon."

Guilty: "Death, forbidden pardon."
Not-guilty: "Death forbidden, pardon."
And so, I was told, a single comma could save your life. There has been a resurgence in the life-saving virtue of the comma. Jest aside, a few years ago Canada saw a $2 million dollar comma dispute.

Occasionally, someone tries to invent a new punctuation mark, but they are rarely successful. A notable exception was the invention of the emoticon that now pervade informal written communication (of the typed, but not handwritten, variety). Emoticons were first proposed by Scott Fahlman on September 19th, 1982. The number and types of emoticons has grown to the point where they may be considered a form of micro-ASCII art.

Recently, there was an attempt to re-purpose the interrobang to represent a unit of levels of abstraction based on the very large, but mostly irrelevant, Cuil search engine.

Fun fact: The Metaist logo uses the because and therefore punctuation symbols from logic and math.

Pre-Weekend Summary (2009-11-13)

Have a good weekend.

Summary
This week Schneier taught us that thieves prefer black luggage, that anti-virus is still a good idea (despite it's moderate effectiveness), and that there are new access control mechanisms as well as methods to mitigate rootkits.

Reddit was full of cappuccino drawings (e.g., Saturn, a dragon, and the Mona Lisa). Speaking of coffee, Matthew Inman taught us some interesting facts about its origins and how it works.

XKCD was sympathetic and political; Wondermark was apiarian; Abstruse Goose was psychological.

Lukas Mathis explained why people don't realize their camcorders have touch screens, and Techdirt exposed Murdoch's ridiculous, not-connected-to-reality thinking.
